What is an Ultrasound?

At Petplex Animal Hospital we have a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine. An ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive diagnostic tool, that produces sound waves to make a picture of internal structures. It can be used to examine the abdomen and internal organs such as, the liver, spleen, bladder, and the GI tract. Ultrasound can also be use to diagnosis and monitor pregnancies, identify tumors, bladder stones, and more!

How do I know if my pet needs an Ultrasound?

Our veterinarians may recommend an ultrasound based on abnormalities on your pet’s lab work or physical exam. For non-established clients or referring clinics, we do require a consult exam prior to the ultrasound appointment to familiarize ourselves with you and your pet. At the consult appointment, we can determine if an ultrasound would be the best diagnostic tool for your pet and/or complete any lab work prior to the ultrasound exam.

What is the procedure for my pet’s Ultrasound?

During an ultrasound exam, your pet will need to be positioned on its back to allow for the exam. To make your pet more comfortable and to allow the exam, a light sedative be necessary. In most cases, the fur on the belly will be shaved and rubbing alcohol or ultrasound gel may be applied to the skin to allow for a clear ultrasound picture. Biopsies or other tissue samples may be obtained. Once the ultrasound exam is completed, we will call you to set up a pick up time for your pet. At discharge, we will discuss the results of the ultrasound exam and any other recommendations for further diagnostics and/or treatments.
