What is a Pyometra?
A pyometra is a potentially life threatening infection of the uterus. It can potentially occur in ANY intact or unspayed female (dog or cat), but is most frequently seen in older intact females. Females who are not spayed, go through numerous heat cycles that can cause the lining of their uterus to become thicker and susceptible to increases in bacteria which can build up over time and cause an infection.
What are the signs of a Pyometra?
In an open pyometra, vaginal discharge (bloody to white discharge) can be present. In a closed pyometra, dogs and cats may not have any discharge and can be more sick. Other symptoms may include:
- Lack of energy/ appetite
- Fever
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Increased thirst and urination
- Vaginal discharge

What is the treatment for a Pyometra?
A pyometra is considered a medical emergency that requires quick medical treatment to prevent an overwhelming infection and potentially death. The treatment is to surgically remove the infected uterus and ovaries by preforming a emergency ovariohysterectomy (spay). Once the ovaries and uterus are removed, there is no chance that your pet can have a pyometra again.
How can I prevent a Pyometra in my pet?
The best and only way to prevent a pyometra is to spay your pet. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus to stop the production of hormones that allow pyometra to happen. It is also safer and much less expensive to spay a healthy young pet than a pet that has a pyometra. Spaying also significantly decreases the risk of uterine and mammary cancers.
