Information on Avery’s Law

Ohio has enacted Avery’s Law (House Bill 247), which strengthens laws regarding dangerous and vicious dogs. The new law focuses on preventing serious dog attacks and holding pet owners accountable. It also requires veterinarians and trainers to be notified of a dog’s known vicious status.

Key updates include:

  • Increased criminal penalties for owners who fail to control dangerous dogs

  • Give the local Dog Warden authority for immediate seizure of dogs after serious attacks

  • Stronger investigation and enforcement requirements for dog wardens

  • Possible court-ordered euthanasia in severe cases after due process

  • Clearer definitions of dangerous and vicious dog behavior under Ohio law

  • Requiring dogs to wear a tag identifying them as dangerous or vicious

Role of Veterinarians 

  • Mandatory reporting of dog bites within 24 hours by medical providers and veterinarians

  • If necessary, providing proof/ administering a rabies vaccine

  • Requiring the dog to be spayed or neutered or producing a statement from a licensed veterinarian that neutering or spaying is medically contraindicated

  • If necessary, microchipping of the dog

This law, effective March 20th, 2026, provides additional tools to protect the public and improve community safety.
